AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college preparatory program offered to students at Bosse, Central, and Harrison. This program is specifically for students who have the desire to go to college, are determined, and will do what it takes to achieve academic success. There are many students who possess a desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard, but may not have the scaffold support in place to push them to be college-ready. These may be students who will be the first in their families to attend college and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. AVID equips students with the skills needed to succeed on a path to college and career success.
AVID places these students on the college track, requiring them to enroll in their school’s most rigorous courses, such as Honors and Advanced Placement. To support them in the rigorous coursework, AVID students learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking, learn to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make their college dreams reality.
AVID is not a study hall, nor is it a remediation program for students who lack basic academic skills. Instead, AVID is an academic elective class for students who already have the potential and desire to transition into higher education after high school. It provides additional tools, resources, and opportunities focused on college and career readiness.
The
benefits of AVID extend into every classroom. Students will learn the following:
● How to build an understanding for higher order questioning
● How to overcome points of confusion through collaborative inquiry groups
● Strategies for critical reading and writing
● Public speaking skills
● Self-advocacy skills
● What it takes to be prepared for college
